Local live-in care

Live-in care in Croydon and Bromley

Live-in care means a carer we employ directly lives in your home, helping with personal care, meals, medication and company through the day, with agreed breaks and rest. We provide it across Croydon, Purley, Thornton Heath, New Addington, Bromley, Beckenham and Orpington, starting with a free home visit and a written quote, with no minimum contract.

The short answers

Live-in care: what families ask first

How much does live-in care cost in Croydon or Bromley?

Our live-in care starts from £1,650 a week, not including cover for the carer's daily breaks, which family usually provide, or the council or NHS when they fund the care. Your price depends on the help needed through the day, whether nights are disturbed and any extra carers. You get the full figure in writing after a free home visit, with no minimum contract.

Is there a local live-in care agency in Croydon?

Yes. Fabulous Homecare Ltd is a CQC-registered home care agency rated Good by the CQC, with its office at Airport House, 265 Purley Way, Croydon, CR0 0XZ. We provide live-in care across the London Boroughs of Croydon and Bromley with carers we employ directly, planned from our Croydon office.

Can the council or NHS pay for live-in care?

Sometimes. Croydon Council and Bromley Council carry out a free care needs assessment, then a financial assessment to decide what they contribute, which you can take as a direct payment. NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund a full care package at home where there is a primary health need, and it is not means-tested.

How quickly can live-in care start?

It depends on finding the right carer, and matching starts straight after your free home visit. If you are working to a date, such as a hospital discharge, tell us and we will say honestly how soon a live-in carer can begin, before you commit to anything.

What it involves

What live-in care looks like in Croydon and Bromley

A live-in carer moves into a spare bedroom in your home and supports the day as it already runs: getting up and washed, meals cooked the way you like them, medication prompted and recorded, the house kept in order, and company through the day. The carer takes an agreed break each day and regular time off, and the care plan sets out who covers those breaks before care starts: usually family, or the council or NHS when they fund the care. If nights are regularly disturbed, the plan may need separate waking-night cover so the live-in carer can sleep.

In Croydon and Bromley, live-in care often begins at a turning point: coming home from Croydon University Hospital or the Princess Royal University Hospital, a fall at home, or a husband, wife, son or daughter who can no longer manage the care alone. The whole arrangement is run from our office at Airport House on Purley Way. The care plan is agreed with you before care starts, the office team is who you call when something needs to change, and urgent calls are answered 24 hours a day.

Live-in care works alongside the local NHS rather than replacing it. Carers report changes to the GP or district nurse, and if needs become clinical, our nurse-led complex care, overseen by our Registered Manager, a registered nurse, can be added without changing provider. For couples, live-in care can be the way to stay together at home rather than one partner moving into a care home.

How we match your live-in carer

Because a live-in carer shares your home as well as your day, matching matters more than with visiting care. At the free home visit in Croydon or Bromley we ask about the person as well as their care needs: daily routine, interests, food, and what makes a day feel like their own. Before care starts we tell you who we propose, and if the fit is wrong once care begins, you can ask for a different carer and we will change it.

Every carer is employed directly by us, not through an agency or a staff bank, and every carer is DBS-checked and trained. New carers usually shadow an experienced colleague before working on their own, and the carers we send to people living with dementia have dementia training. If your carer is away, we tell you in advance and tell you who is covering. The carer writes a note of each day, so the family can see how the week has gone.

Costs

What live-in care costs locally

Our live-in care starts from £1,650 a week. That price does not include cover for the carer's daily breaks: family members usually cover them, or the council or NHS arranges it when they fund the care. No two arrangements are the same, so your own price is quoted after a free home visit, with no obligation to go ahead. The quote is in writing, and there is no minimum contract. If you only need visits rather than a carer living in, our hourly visiting care starts from £26 an hour.

If you are comparing live-in care with a care home, compare the whole package: the live-in quote with any extra cover, against the care home's weekly fee and anything it charges on top. Our funding guide explains the help that may be available, and we can talk it through at the home visit.

Funding

Help with paying for live-in care

Council funding and direct payments

Croydon Council and Bromley Council each carry out a free care needs assessment for their residents, followed by a financial assessment of what the council will contribute. If you qualify, you can ask for the money as a direct payment and spend it with a provider you choose, including us.

NHS Continuing Healthcare

Where an assessment finds a primary health need, NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund a full care package at home. It is not means-tested. The fast-track route is for someone whose condition is deteriorating rapidly and may be entering a terminal phase. Ask the GP, district nurse or hospital team about an assessment.

Attendance Allowance

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care. It is not means-tested, it is paid to you, and it can go towards the cost of live-in care. Family carers may also qualify for Carer's Allowance. The official pages explain current rates and how to claim.

Your questions answered

Live-in care locally: common questions

Do you provide live-in care in Purley?

Yes. Purley is about a mile and a half by road from our office on Purley Way, and live-in care is available there as in every town we cover. Purley is in the London Borough of Croydon, so a council care needs assessment goes through Croydon Council. Call us to arrange a free home visit.

Do you provide live-in care in Beckenham and Bromley?

Yes. We provide live-in care across the London Borough of Bromley, including Bromley, Beckenham and Orpington, planned and supported from our Croydon office. Bromley Council carries out care needs assessments for Bromley residents, and the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough is the borough's main hospital.

What is the difference between live-in care and 24-hour care?

Live-in care means one carer living in the home, with an agreed daily break and a proper night's sleep. If someone needs help through the night most nights, one carer cannot safely be awake around the clock, so the plan adds separate waking-night cover. We assess nights at the free home visit and include the right cover in the quote.

Can live-in care start straight after a hospital stay?

It can, if the right carer is available in time. Tell us the expected discharge date, whether from Croydon University Hospital, the Princess Royal University Hospital or another hospital, and we plan backwards from it. We will tell you honestly how soon the right carer can start, and we coordinate with the discharge team where it helps.
